Deku

Back to Races

The Deku or ‘Deku Scrubs’ are a widespread race of short plant-people commonly found in swamps and deep forests. deku.jpg

Physical Description: More than anything, a Deku Scrub looks like a stocky wooden trunk with flexible branches for arms and legs and a pronounced ‘snout’. Their eyes glow a dim orange as if they were bioluminescent. In place of hair or eyebrows Deku grow leaves, which in some cases can be quite elaborate. A Decu’s coloration changes with the season, becoming green in the spring and brown in the fall.

Society: Most Deku societies are ruled over by a hereditary royal family which mirrors that of Hyrlian society. Deeper into the wild and rural areas Deku Scrubs are more likely to simply govern themselves and live how they please.

Deku Scrubs aren’t Plants? From a purely fluff perspective, Deku are certainly plants. However, from a mechanical perspective they have little in common with the Plant type. The Deku that Link encounter are shown to sleep, run in fear, and drown in water, among other things. The advantages gained by the Plant type would also make them very powerful as player characters.

Deku Clerics with the Plant domain use their domain powers and spells at +1 caster level. This trait does not grant early access to level-based powers; it only affects powers that they could already use without this trait.

Fire Vulnerability: A Deku’s wooden body is especially flammable, causing them to take half again as much damage from fire attacks.

Korok

Koroks appear to be nothing more than child-sized seeds with a leafy mask for their face and a sprout on their hethawing up to four leaves that allows them to fly. Koroks are more fun loving people then the Deku Shrubs. They get along with most races and they enjoy the simple things in life like a good song, or a gentle breeze.
